An "Unidentifiable Flying Object"
Cecil Willis
The North American Christian Convention of the Christian Church met in St. Louis in July 1964. Participating in the program was Carl Ketcherside, editor of the Mission Messenger, and Robert Meyers, Minister of the Riverside Church of Christ in Wichita, Kansas. The Riverside church founded and then controlled the Maude Carpenter Orphan's Home until recently. In Meyer's review of the convention, published in the Riverside bulletin (July 19, 1964), he stated that the three men on the panel on which he participated were "a liberal Christian Church man, a conservative Christian Church man, and a sort of unidentifiable flying object from the non-instrumental Churches of Christ . . ." Brother Meyers aptly described himself. He is "a sort of unidentifiable flying object." But he's on the move, as are all flying objects. His earthly destiny is indicated by another statement he makes. He says, "Perhaps the implication of some things I said would have aligned me more closely on that day with the Disciples (the ultra-liberals--CW) than with the conservatives . . ." Actually these liberal brethren in the churches of Christ have more in common with the liberal Disciples of Christ denomination, and are most apt to end up there. Already they associate more with and speak more for the Christian Church than for the churches of Christ. The landing area of these "flying objects" already casts its shadow before -- Attention, local Christian Church -- Here they come! Truth Magazine VIII: 12, p. 19 September 1964 |
