Does Character Count Now?

Bobby Graham

When Bill Clinton was running for the nation’s highest office in 1992 and occasionally when he was serving as President, we heard his defenders claim that character should not make a difference in choosing a President or supporting him in office. We did not then believe the claim, and we now believe it even less.

It also appears that his one-time defenders — national Democrats, media, and the Hollywood crowd, are now hastening to escape his dark shadow. As they protest his recent actions as unconscionable, disgraceful, and indefensible, they must remember that his shadow is one that they helped to darken, by their encouragement and defense of the indefensible, the disgraceful, and the unconscionable. Character, on the part of the perpetrator and his defenders/apologists, would have prevented this disgrace!

Is it not time to concede that character is all that does count? One’s thoughts, words, actions, habits, ways of life all flow from his character. Let us thank God for men of character, who stoop not for money, fame, or expediency of the moment, but bow only for what is right as defined by him who alone is righteous.

May we pray for officeholders who in their own words and actions uphold the highest principles and even sacrifice fame for right.
